ALL ABOUT AGATE LAKE

Agate Lake may be modest in size at just 157 acres, but its charm and character make it a true northern gem. With roughly two miles of quiet shoreline and no public access, the lake offers remarkable privacy and peacefulness versus a large lake with constant jet ski noise. Longtime guests often say, “It’s the best lake to learn to waterski on—there’s virtually no boat traffic.” At most, you’ll see a pontoon or two and the occasional fishing boat, preserving the lake’s calm, relaxed atmosphere.

This spring-fed lake is renowned for its crystal-clear water, free from the “summer bloom” and swimmer's itch that affects many other lakes in the area. Its pristine clarity makes swimming, paddling, and simply enjoying the views a pleasure.

Despite its small footprint, Agate Lake provides outstanding fishing opportunities. Anglers can look forward to an impressive variety of species, including largemouth bass, northern pike, walleye, crappie, bluegill, perch, and several bullhead species. The lake is particularly known for its bass fishing; one largemouth caught here came within just seven ounces of the state record.

Flanked by towering Norway pines and featuring a large, gently sloping sandy beach, the setting is quintessential Northwoods beauty. Wildlife watchers will also appreciate the chance to observe a pair of loons nesting along the shore. Their haunting calls echo across the still water, and the lake’s remarkable transparency even lets you watch them diving beneath the surface.

Quiet, clear, and full of character, Agate Lake shows that great things truly do come in small packages.

You are welcome to launch your boat here at Agate Lake Resort, but protecting the lake from Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) is our top priority. Because Agate Lake has no public access, it has remained pristine—and we work hard to keep it that way.

To prevent the spread of AIS, all boats must be clean, dry, and out of any other body of water for at least 14 days before entering Agate Lake. This drying period is essential to ensure that invasive species cannot survive and be introduced into the lake.

Every boat is inspected according to DNR regulations prior to launching. Boats that have not met the required 14-day dry time cannot be launched.

The cost to bring your own boat to the resort is $65, which includes:

  • Launching your boat at the start of your stay

  • Pulling it out when you depart

  • A convenient dock space near your cabin

If you prefer not to trailer your own boat, we also offer pontoon and fishing boat rentals at the resort, making it easy to enjoy Agate Lake’s peaceful, low-traffic waters.

These measures help preserve the crystal-clear, quiet lake environment that makes Agate Lake so special—for you, for wildlife, and for future generations.
